SAMGYETANG

15th January 2022

As it was our last day in Seoul, we took our time to get ready and check out of the hotel. We started our day by waking up around 9.00 am and taking our RTK test to make sure we were all good to go. We then took a shower to keep ourselves fresh and neat as we needed to check out of the hotel before 12.30 p.m. After we got ready, we packed up our things, had some light breakfast, which was the biscuits we bought, and left to check out the hotel before going to the restaurant where we planned to have our lunch. This place was also recommended by our friend Mei Chen; we can get the famous samgyetang there.

This shop is located at Jahan-ro 5-gil, Jongno-gu,Seoul. We took a bus to the restaurant, and the journey to get there was around 16 minutes. The journey to the restaurant was very peaceful and calm as there weren’t many people on the bus. I got the window seat, so I was able to enjoy the scenery and see a lot of things while the bus was running, like trees, shops, huge buildings, houses, and a lot of other vehicles. I had the chance to open the window and felt the fresh breeze on my cheeks, and it was very awesome and very calming.

Afterward, we reached the restaurant that we had been waiting to visit. This restaurant has been our top priority to visit to. Our friend told us it was a surprise, so she didn’t tell us the name of the shop. Tosokchon Samgyetang was the restaurant’s name. It is well known for its samgyetang, which is known as ginseng chicken soup. The restaurant had a very traditional and unique vibe. We had to line up to get into the restaurant as they have myriad customers lining up. The line was quite long, but we managed to get in around 10–12 minutes.

The restaurant's dining area was divided into rooms with a few tables. Guests were advised to remove their shoes before entering. The dining was at the low-lying tables with no chairs, just cushions on the floor to sit on. It gave us the traditional feel there, and we got to enjoy the dining experience in a hanok.

There were two options for the signature samgyetang (ginseng soup), one being black chicken and the other being regular chicken. The chicken meat was seriously tender and it came in a whole chicken. All we needed to do was to open it gently in half, where we found the glutinous rice, ginseng, whole garlic cloves, chestnuts, and dates inside it.

We ordered two types of samgyetang to give it a try. The chicken was so moist and tender that it just fell off the bones easily without extra effort. The taste was so favorable that we were on cloud nine eating it. It is a perfect dish for cold weather. They also served us some kimchi that had a very balanced sweet and spicy taste along with the soup.

The price for one portion starts at 15,000 for regular samgyetang and the price for black chicken was 22,000. I would definitely recommend this restaurant to anyone who is planning to visit Seoul one day.

We finished having our lunch there, paid the bill, and had to move from there to catch a bus to Incheon airport. The journey to the airport took around 1 hour and 4 minutes. We reached the airport in no time as there weren't many cars on the road. The airport was quite crowded with a lot of people as they were also departing from Seoul. In short, we really enjoyed our time in Seoul. We really missed the atmosphere and also the places we went after coming back to our hometown.

Location: 5, Jahamun-ro 5-gil, Jongno-gu, Seoul, South Korea.
